Big versus Small Projects
I am partial to small projects over large. And I have a simple solution to the problems of large projects.
Small projects most most easily enable the team to take ownership. And they enable stakeholders to get regular deliverables and measure progress and realize intended value more quickly.
Lareger projects provide scale. This is often necessary, but I think that in many cases, it is smart to segment larger projects into several smaller ones. Give several project managers the chance to run them, taking on a higher degree of responsibility that they ever would as a part of a larger project.
One net thing that people often forget is that there are no fixed rules when defining a project. Define it in such a way that it serves you and the stakeholders. Tangible outcomes are more likely.
