How Many PDUs Do You Really Need?

Many people ask me if I can recommend some specific training so that they can begin earning their 60 PDUs. Before answering that question, it is helpful to change the question a bit so that the answer becomes a lot easier.

Here are the changes a number of partial answers that actually alter the original question - in your favor!

  1. DO YOU REALLY NEED 60 PDUs? - Yes, the requirement is 60 PDUs, but effectively you typically only have to find 45 PDUs - if you submit your work experience as 5 PDUs per year.
  2. WHAT WOULD BE USEFUL TO LEARN RIGHT NOW? - There are so many ways that the PMI provides to earn PDUs that you owe it to yourself to be more proactive about it and use it to your advantage. For example, let's say you have a big presentation coming up, or that you expect to be giving regular presentations as part of your new assignment, then earn some PDUs taking courses on giving great project presentations as part of project communications. If you want to build your network, attend PMI local chapter meetings and earn PDUs in person. You can also research a topic, write a blog, and the list goes on...
  3. EARN PDUs AND A NEW CERTIFICATION - You can earn another certification - and PDUs - at the same time! This is the ultimate "kill two birds with one stone" way to earn PDUs...and walk away with a new certification in Business analysis, ITIL, PRINCE2, Six Sigma, Agile, MS Project, or others. The key is to think about your skills now, where you want to be, what your natural strengths are, what you like to do. How will the certification enhance your career? It it's a go for you, make sure you can earn the PDUs at the same time.

The only way that I think is a bad way is to do something that you don't want, that will not potentially serve you in some way. so the challenge really becomes in choosing your direction and going for something of your choice that will help take you where you want to go.

So, if you take a look at what the 60 PDUs really means, you can quickly reduce the size of the challenge, use it to help you with your current problems, or satisfy the requirement while at the same time enhancing your resume with another certification. Take a look, plan according to your situation, and execute your plan to your advantage!
